Axminster

Axminster, on the eastern edge of Devon, is a quiet little market-town, built on a hill overlooking the River Axe.

Axminster has famously given its name to a type of carpet – the "Axminster-type" power loom is capable of weaving some of the highest quality carpets with many colours and patterns. Axminster carpets are still made in the town today.

The town can trace its history back to the Celtic era around 300 BC and has always been strategically important as it lies on two major Roman roads – the Fosse Way from Lincoln to Seaton and the Dorchester to Exeter road. There are still traces of the Roman history in the region, with a Roman Fort sited just to the south of the town.

The River Axe valley provides lovely walking opportunities and coastal walks along the Dorset and East Devon heritage coast. Lyme Regis, Seaton, Sidmouth, Beer and Branscombe all within easy reach. Historic and NT sites to explore include Forde Abbey and Montacute House. Golf, riding and fishing all available locally.
