The Isles of Scilly are located about 28 miles from Land’s End, Cornwall, and are made up of about 180 small rocky islets and islands, including the five inhabited islands of St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Bryher. The islands are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). To get to the Isles of Scilly there are regular boat and air connections from the Cornwall mainland to St Mary’s, although ferries still do not run on Sundays. From St Mary’s there are connecting boats to the other inhabited islands. Only St Mary’s has any road network to speak of, although all the islands are small enough to allow visitors walk everywhere. Many visitors have been returning to the Scilly Isles for many years, enjoying the peace and quiet, the mild climate, the unspoilt beaches and the freedom to enjoy traditional family holidays and short breaks.
St Marys
St Marys is the largest of the islands and the main population and economic centre; home to about three quarters of the population. It is an island of hidden treasures set in a land of contrasting scenery. As you explore the island you will encounter sand dunes, whose marram grass covered mounds are enhanced by a profusion of wild African agapanthus flowers. Walkers will love the diversity of fauna and flora that can be found in woodlands, heath and marshland settings.
St Marys historic past can be seen in the many ancient monuments on the island. The Isles of Scilly Museum in Hugh Town and the Heritage Centre in the middle of the island display much of the Isles of Scillys rich history.
