Torpoint in Cornwall is situated on a peninsula in East Cornwall, across the River Tamar from Plymouth. Here the ferry now connects Cornwall with Devon and it has always been a crossing route for small boats, ferrying people and goods between Cornwall and England. The ferry is free for foot passengers and there is a small charge for cars travelling in the Plymouth direction.
Torpoint became a larger town in the early nineteenth Century. Previously the nearby village of Antony was the main village in the area, although families have lived beside the Tamar river for centuries and there is a mention of this area in the Domesday Book.
Nearby Torpoint is a pretty stretch of tidal water known as St John’s Lake. Although Torpoint is close to the city of Plymouth in Devon, the local people are very proud of their Cornish identity.
The nearby villages of Millbrook and Cawsand are also popular places to stay for a holiday in the Torpoint area.
